On a verdant street in the Sand Section six blocks from the beach, this site-specific Modernism is at once responsive to environmental conditions yet committed to high design ideals. Rotated off axis in plan, the main form tapers downward, focusing views and creating a generous back yard landscape – a rarity in the South Bay. The home is oriented vertically around an organic central courtyard with an ocean-view deck up above. At the top, Living, Dining, Kitchen and Family Rooms all have spectacular views, from downtown Los Angeles and snowcapped San Gabriels on one end to Palos Verdes and Catalina Island on the other. Corrugated metal, concrete block and storefront glass form a hard-edged exterior, yet inside the tone is pure warmth: bamboo floors, walnut and alder cabinets, sunlight and cool breezes, doors wide open to nature. No expense has been spared in fit and finish, the high quality of construction evident in every detail.
