Originally a 1,400-square-foot 1951 ranch-style home, this property at the base of a hillside in the Santa Monica Canyon has been reborn twice since. In 1989, architect Warren Wagner was commissioned fresh out of graduate school to redesign the house, a project that ended up including annexing 400 square feet of garage space and adding a new carport.

In 2012, Wagner, who who runs his own firm W3 Architects based in Venice, CA, was enlisted again to reimagine the place for a family with three young kids. This time, a new second-story volume with a 410-square-foot master suite was added. The result, which now holds five bedrooms and four baths over 2,615 square feet, is beautifully coherent, tied together by the extensive use of glass walls and natural materials. The lush landscaping, plus that tuft of green roof covering an outdoor dining area, also adds to what the architects call a “rustic modernism.”
