DPP Bids Farewell to Modernist Architect, Ray Kappe, 92

Although he supposedly disliked being called a “Modernist” architect, Ray Kappe has been undoubtedly modern and current throughout his entire career. And as of Thursday, November 21st at the age of 92, Ray Kappe will add “Timeless” to his legacy. As one of the pioneering forces of indoor/outdoor living that has come to define the quintessential California lifestyle, Kappe designed his homes in respect to the environment. Kappe started his career in architecture after graduating from UC Berkley, and went on to found the school of architecture at Cal Poly Pomona as well as the Southern California Institute of Architecture, or SCI-arc. Part of Kappe’s ethos ingrained into SCI-arc’s mission emphasized social and cultural concerns; Kappe fully believed in the democratizing culture of post WWII America. He was an outspoken candidate for pre-fabricated homes and affordable housing. With an impressive career spanning 5 decades, Kappe’s work can be found all over Southern California from Pacific Palisades to Pasadena. One of his most famous works is the Kappe Residence inside the famous Kappe Colony of homes.

DPP is proud to have represented Ray Kappe designed homes as a part of our mission to buy and sell significant Los Angeles architecture with an emphasis on respecting the art of architecture as well as preservation of the cultural landscape that makes Southern California unique.
