Early-’80s Kit House in Pasadena Pays Homage to 16th Century Japan

 
Although this home in Pasadena’s Poppy Peak district was constructed from a kit, no one would ever call it “cookie-cutter.” Erected in 1981, the three-bedroom residence is one of just a handful in Southern California made to order by a design/build firm founded in the 1970s by Gordon Steen.

A native Angeleno, Steen developed a passion for the architecture of the 16th-century country houses he saw while stationed in Japan with the U.S. Air Force. After getting out of the military, Steen got into the business of replicating his version of the rustic cottages, adapted to suit the standards of modern living.
