Open House Obsession: Franklin Hills Mid-Century, $1.8M

By Philip Ferrato

Built in 1965, now sensitively and recently renovated, this 4-bed, 3-bath home by architect Dick E. Lowry is a classic. Originally from Canada, Lowry worked primarily around Los Feliz and Silver Lake, and his homes are contributory structures in the area’s Modernist history.

Located at 3733 Clayton Avenue, there are open houses this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, July 13/14, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm both days. Like so many houses of the period, the exterior doesn’t give much away, but inside, it’s an interlocking series of light-filled spaces stacked on a compact lot.

What We Love: In addition to a skilled renovation, period-appropriate light fixtures by Louis Poulsen and George Nelson, the stacked interior spaces create an interplay of shifting light and dark, all day long.

The simply detailed teak kitchen is period-appropriate yet totally up-to-date.
